COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since become a global pandemic.
The virus primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face.
- Common symptoms include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.
- Other symptoms may include fatigue, muscle or body aches, loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion, nausea, or diarrhea.
- Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and some individuals may be asymptomatic (showing no symptoms).
- Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth in public settings.
- Maintain physical distancing of at least 6 feet from others who are not from your household.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces daily.
- Get vaccinated against COVID-19 to protect yourself and others.
There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supporting vital organ functions, especially in severe cases.
Severe cases may require hospitalization, oxygen therapy, and in some cases, intensive care unit (ICU) support.
